Frequently asked questions

FAQs

  • There are several reasons I chose not to accept insurance in my practice.

    1) Privacy: Not all individuals want their insurance company to know they are seeking mental health services. This could be for a variety of reasons that are usually specific to an individuals home or work situation.

    2) Diagnosis: Insurance companies require a diagnosis in order to bill. Sometimes a diagnosis doesn’t apply to an individual. In some cases, it can help an individual to know what the diagnosis is but this isn’t always the case.

    3) Frequency of sessions: Insurance companies prescribe the number of sessions the individual qualifies for. When insurance is not billed, we can determine the treatment plan that is best for you without restriction on the number of sessions. This gives us the flexibility to do what we need to do to get you moving toward the life you want!

    4) Waitlist: There can be waitlists for clinicians who bill insurance. In my practice, I will make every effort to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

  • A superbill is a statement provided every 4-6 sessions detailing the services rendered. You may use this “invoice” to submit an out of network claim to your insurance company. However, a diagnosis code is required when a super bill is issued. Your insurance company will reimburse you directly.

Websites such as www.reimbursify.com or www.thesuperbill.com can assist you in submitting the claim to your insurance company.

I’ve also created a downloadable Out of Network Worksheet to help you contact your insurance company.

  • A 24-hour notice is required to cancel a scheduled appointment. You will be billed the full cost of the session if 24-hour notice is not provided.

  • Prior to opening my private practice, I was the administrator of the HIPAA/Privacy Program and Compliance at the Durham VA Medical Center and the Richmond VA Medical Center. I know HIPAA!

The software used in my business is “Simple Practice” which is HIPAA compliant along with Google Business which is also HIPAA compliant. It is likely you will never see another client coming into my office as the waiting room is private and scheduling is done to minimize overlap of clients. Parking is at the back of the building. My office is on the second floor. Also, you work with me to schedule your appointments and you work with me in therapy. At this time, I do not have nor desire to hire administrative support or additional clinicians. My intention is to keep the practice small but thriving. You are not just a name here.

  • At this time, I am not able to meet any emergency mental health needs. If you or someone you know is in danger, please dial 988, 911 or go to your closest emergency room.

  • My in person office is located at 906 N. Parham Rd., Suite 203, Henrico, VA 23229 (see Contact page)

  • I am licensed to provide Telehealth within Virginia and North Carolina. You will need to be physically present in one of those states to meet for a therapy session over video call. I will send you a link to a secure platform before the session.

  • Just contact me via email or phone. We’ll figure it out! Likely I will suggest we keep our regularly scheduled appointment and meet via telehealth. I have a life outside of work, too, so I get it.

  • The U is silent. Fem-Ler.

  • I make every effort to start and end each session on time. If you are late, no time will be added to the session and the full fee will be charged. A phone call or text to let me know you are running late is always appreciated.

  • The first session may feel uncomfortable if you’ve never been to therapy before. This is normal! My job is to put you at ease and discuss some of the issues that you’d like to address in therapy. At this time, we will determine the goals for treatment and address any questions you may have.

  • I am currently licensed in Virginia and North Carolina and am not able to see client’s for a session who are not physically in either of these states.

  • I primarily see clients between the hours of 9am-1pm. I am not able to offer evening or weekend appointments at this time.

  • My practice is a solo, female owned psychotherapy practice in person in Richmond, Virginia and virtual across Virginia and North Carolina. My intention is to keep the practice small, personable, accessible to adults (ages 18+) in need of mental health support. My hours are from 9am-1pm Monday to Friday.
